Retrofitting a Media Player to An Existing TV/Display
Use this guide to assist you in replacing or adding a media player to an existing TV/Display.
If you need assistance, please don't hesitate to call or text us.
In the box you received, there should be a media player, power cord, and a HDMI cable (the HDMI cable may not be needed if one is already connected to your TV/Display.). If anything is missing from your package, please contact us for a replacement.
If there is a label affixed to the media player specifying its placement, be sure to connect it to the corresponding TV/Display.
If there is NOT a label specifying its placement, please take note of the label that specifies the device name (e.g. Desktop-H25TCH). We find it's best to take a photo with your smart phone. Take note of which TV/Display the media player is being connected to.
Step 1:
Prepare the TV and remove the old media player (if one is being replaced).
- Locate the remote for the TV/Display that the media player will be attached to.
- If you are unable to locate the remote, the TV/Display may have physical buttons that can be used instead.
- Power on the TV/Display.
- Take note of the input the TV/Display is currently set to. Typically, it will be: HDMI1, HDMI 2 etc.
If the media player is not labeled to specify its placement (e.g. Menu Screen 1, Front of Store Display, Counter Left) please take note of the label that specifies the device name (Desktop-*****). Either take a picture, or write down the name of the device, and where it is being placed.
- Remove the old media player (if it is being replaced).
- If replacing an existing media player, and it is the same model/device type - it is acceptable to use the existing power cord and HDMI cable.
Step 2:
Connect the new media player
- Connect the HDMI cable into the TV/Display, if you are able to see the label of the port on the TV/Display (e.g. HDMI 1, HDMI 2) take note of which port it is plugged into. The HDMI ports are usually on the side of the TV,/Display or on the rear of the TV/Display.
- Connect the other end of the HDMI cable into the media player.
- If a network cable is available, connect the network cable to the media player, and check that the network cable is also firmly connected to the wall port.
- Connect the media player power supply into a power outlet.
- Connect the media player end of the power supply into the media player.
Step 3:
Verify that the media player is functioning.
- Once connected to power, the media player should automatically power on. There is usually an LED light indicating that the device has power. It may be blue, green or red.
- If you are unable to see any indication that the media player has power, wait a few moments, and check the TV/Display for any kind of signal (a loading screen, a Windows desktop, or other indication the media player is functioning).
- If there is no signal on the TV/Display, and there is no indication that the media player has powered on, press the power button once on the media player, wait a few moments, and check for a power light on the media player, or signal on the TV/Display.
- If there is no indication that the media player is powering on, please see the troubleshooting steps below.
- If the media player powers on, and there is no signal on the TV/Display, see the troubleshooting steps below.
- Once the TV/Display is displaying the output of the media player (either a digital signage application or a Windows desktop) move on to the next step.
Step 4:
Verify content and connectivity.
- At this point the media player should be powered on, connected to the TV/Display, and displaying either a digital signage application or the Windows desktop.
- If the media player is on the Windows desktop, please text or call us at (855)-961-0700 be sure to have the name of the device (e.g. Desktop-H25TCH), your location, company, and the type of TV/Display ready. If you're texting us, feel free to send over any photos you have taken thus far, as well as the above information.
- If the media player is playing content, please text or call us at (855)-961-0700. Please have your location, company, and the type of display ready.
- We will connect to the device remotely (if the network is functioning) and finish the setup process if required.
Step 5:
Clean up
- If you were provided Velcro, please affix it to the bottom of the media player. It is double sided self-adhesive Velcro. Remove on side of the adhesive backing, and firmly attach it to the bottom of the media player. Press firmly in place for 10-20 seconds. Remove the remaining adhesive backing, and firmly press the media player to the rear of the TV/Display (or other position that fits your needs). We typically try to place the media player towards the top center of the TV/Display, in case the adhesive fails, it will not fall to the floor.
- Tuck any dangling cables behind the TV, or in a position that suits your liking.
Step 6:
TV/Display Settings (if applicable).
Some TV/Displays have settings that we can enable to help ensure a trouble free digital signage experience.
Here are the settings we are typically looking for:
- Auto Power On, Power Recovery, or Auto On
- This setting will automatically turn the TV/Display on when it detects an input, or if there is a power outage and power is restored.
- If your TV/Display has this setting, make sure it is enabled, and if there is an option for a source or input, that it is set to the source/input that the media player is currently connected to (HDMI 1, HDMI 2, etc.).
- Auto source, Primary Source, Primary Source Switching
- This setting ensures that when the display is powered on, it connects to the proper device/source/input.
- If your TV/Display has this setting, be sure it is set to the source/input that the media player is currently connected to.
- On/Off Timers, Auto Power Off Timer, Standby Mode
- These timers can automatically power on your TV/Display, or turn it off.
- If your TV/Display has On/Off timers, we recommend that you enable them for 30 minutes before your business opens, and 30 minutes after your business closes.
- if your TV/Display has any settings for 'No Signal Power Off' disable this setting. This will help us in diagnosing any issues in the future.
- Time and Date
- If your TV/Display has any timers, be sure that the time and date are set to the current time, otherwise you may have issues with the timers turning on/off at the incorrect times.
If you are unable to find any of these settings, please consult the owners/user manual for your TV/Display. If you are unable to locate it, please contact us and we will assist. Please be ready with the model number and brand of your TV/Display. This can typically be found in the Settings menu, in the About section.
That's it! Your digital signage media player should be functioning and playing content. If you have encounter any issues, please do not hesitate to contact us, we're here to help!
